IS SENTIMENTALITY REALLY FUTILE?

Hello there, dear friends on this beautiful Monday.
MAXMOM here...
I hope you all had a wonderful weekend!.

---xXx---

It can be said that a lot is revealed about a person by the things they keep around them.

If I look around my own home it is brimming with objects of sentimentality. Some belong to me, others belong to the members of my family. Whilst reason suggest that it really is quite silly to be keeping all this "Stuff", no argument seems to persuade us to part with them.

So why do we surround ourselves with objects that really serve no purpose?
The answer...
SENTIMENTALITY!

Although I am on a restrictive calorie diet, I can't seem to part with this little Easter cow!
To me...it's also too beautiful to be eaten..!.
...even though it's just the wrapping which makes it attractive...
???

Then there is THIS mug which was given to me 23 years ago whilst I was breastfeeding my young daughter...

Together with its prominent mammary glands...

...and why can I not venture to part with this carving which has decended through the family tree for who knows how many generations?
I don't even know what the material is...looks like soap to me!?!

...Or this ornament which came back to me after the death of my mother.
I remember saving up all my pocket money, whilst at boarding school, and walking miles to a little shop to buy my mother a really special birthday present...

Even the sentiment of the inscription has remained true to my heart over all these years...!?!

...and this...my pet rock?
...an attempt at creating an 'immortal' Maxdog in 2002...?

...and here's another unbelievable story:

When I was still at university in the late 1970's, I bought my mother a little Marzipan Dog for Easter. My (now) husband and I travelled over 450kms with this little gift for her...we knew how much she loved animals and thought the gift would be perfect.

Well it was...
She didn't eat the Marzipan Dog, but elected to keep it in her showcase.
Can you imagine my surprise, after the death of my mother last November, to discover this little dog?!?
The only thing that had changed was its colour...
It had morphed from a yellow caramel to a dark brown...

That is about 40 years ago!!!! (Quite Unbelievable!)
...and now...?
It is with me, in my own home with another sentimental question-mark over its head...

...and the 'biscuit'...is still there!
... although VERY fragile!
INCREDIBLE!!!

More recently however, i.e. this past Easter, my husband gave me an Easter Gift...

The question is...
Am I going to assign this gift to sentimentality yet again!

Judging from the smug look on the chicken's beak,
I'm not so sure!

So what are you, my readers holding on to???
I would love to hear...!
You are welcome to leave a LONG comment!

Way too many things that have sentimental value here, but in Florida the marzipan would have melted or have been taken away by the bugs...but I do have a lock of fur from my first dog and her dog tags... a yellowed wedding cake top, that looks totally disgusting, ...a leather bracelet that my brother wore before he died, that is broken and his pink lava lamp!... 5 stuffed animals from my childhood, over 40 years old...literally boxes of my kids artwork and school work, they are both grown and gone,
and the list goes on...

Oh mercy! If I had a nickel for every time I've heard my husband complain about all the "stuff" here, I'd be a wealthy woman! I've got all kinds of stuff. A collection of porcelain shell angels sits in the bookshelf. I have some teddy bears that my husband gave me when we were dating that I haven't been able to give up. There are all sorts of greyhound paraphenalia, too.

I'll have to try and get a picture of the butter cow that goes on display every year at the State Fair here in August. I think it would fit in with your cows!

Oh my goodness, there aren't blog pages enough for me to photograph and list all of the goodies I have kept over the years: snips of my son's first haircuts, school papers and report cards, my son's cast from his broken arm, sugar cubes from a tea party held over 20 years ago, my scrapbook when I was 11 years old, toys and collars of dogs that have passed away, a book JUST LIKE THE ONE YOU BOUGHT FOR YOUR MOM but with a slightly different poem (great minds think alike), all of the Christmas ornaments my sons made for our tree when they were in school, little clay figurines and bowls my boys made in grade school, my cat, Camille's whisker that fell out and I found by chance (they are supposed to be good luck), all of the Christmas decorations that belonged to my parents, old silverware that belonged to my mother, my size 6 blue jeans (I should have them bronzed☺), old calendars with pretty pictures too nice to toss out, candy that is so old I would never eat it but it looks pretty in the glass jar as a decoration (that one is really weird), a prayer book written in Polish that was my great auntie's (wish I could read Polish), a toy Cocker Spaniel that my aunt Ann gave to me for Christmas when I was 5, a Cocker Spaniel bank that my father gave to me when I was 6, the medical records of all my dogs and cats going back decades and decades - how much more would you like to know, hehehe!

Oh, and to answer your question, NO, sentimentality is NOT futile. As we grow older we NEED people to be sentimental so they'll keep us dusted, clean and in good form! ☺

Oh my, you've just given me the topic of my next post. So you stay tuned.
I keep things because of the people I think of when I see the "thing." I'm incredibly sentimental, a sap. Call it what you will but to me it's love.

You have adorable keepsakes!...I've kept things from my animals (fur, whiskers from my cat Nikki, feathers from my bird, Skye, my dog, Seagrams' collar, etc) and things from my family, a big map of South Louisiana USA I found in my grandparents bar after they died is framed and hangs on a wall in my den as well as a framed poster from the last Fats Domino concert my Grandmother went to see in 1989, she just loved the concert and Fats used to play on the jukebox in their bar when I was a little girl=good memories...I also have a painting of me and Nikki (my 20 year old cat that passed away in 2004; it was painted the summer before she died and my painter friend took photos of me and Nik in a pose like a picture from 1984 when Nik was 6 months old and I was 19-the painting is when she was almost 20 and I was almost 39 in that same pose, looking into each other's eyes, which is how Nikki died, in my arms, looking into my eyes!) that takes up the wall across from my bed, it is the first thing I see when I get up every morning...My Nikki painting is very unique in content and framing; the canvas is framed in all glass so the border of the painting is the blue paint of the wall it is hanging on.

We keep things because our heart tells us to.
These are just a few.
My mom has an old levi jacket from 1971 that she embrodried her horses name on the collar and now it is shredded and ragged- but she keeps it in her drawer. She had a strand of braided horse hair from her first horse ever. She has all her moms stuff - in boxes. She died 10 years ago.
3 pair of skinny levis that she cannot get into.
Mom says no one better ever give away her precious memories.
That is what they are- memories.

Hi Max's Mom, Madi's mom here.
Oh what a lovely post!!! One of my most treasured possessions is a paper cut out of my daughter's silhouette when she was 5. Beside my computer there is a little piece of pottery she made in 1st grade (she is 38 now). I keep it because quite simply it makes me smile. Once she made me a coupon holder out of construction paper. It was very colorful. I have it...oh and all the little notes she used to write.... When my hubby and I were date he used to leave me chewing gum with messages on the wrappers.I have them the gum is hard as a rock. HA!!The first ring he ever gave me was the pop top off a coke can....I have that too.
Oh my gosh I could go on and on.
Thank you for this lovely post!!!

PS I just remembered I have a lock of my daughter's hair mounted in a tiny double frame with a picture of her on the other side. At the time her hair was the color of summer wheat...I knew it would not stay that color. I'm so glad I have the picture and lock of hair.

I have a few sentimental objects, but the one that comes to mind is a small light blue vase that when I was a child, I would pick dandelions for my mother, and she would place them in this little blue vase. As soon as I see some dandelions in bloom, I will pick some and do a blog post about it with a photo.
