STANDING TOGETHER

Across distant seas, in lands unknown
People like me, all of us groan!
The horrors of that day, Appalled!
A moment in time, Our earth was stalled,

Mayhem, shock, dreaded fear,
Noise, the screaming, oh so near!
Division, dignity laid aside,
All laid open, nothing to hide,

Down the streets, a dusty mill,
The silence so loud, all is still,
Faces ghostly, terror sheer,
Oh so far, but Oh so near,

Perhaps in time, maybe forgotten,
…but always remembered however rotten,
That day our globe stood still,
we watched the damage of human will.

My friends, although never met
How on earth can I forget
Our pain, Our grief, Our open terror
Nightmares, Angst of human error?

Horror, Bitterness, vengeance, greed
What has happened to our basic need?
Humanity, compassion, love and care
Gone its seems, we all just stare.

But in the distance a faint wind blows
Peace across nations, a heavenly glow.
I care, I do, I really do
My love, it flows to You and You

We learn, we love, we share, beneath
All your horror, All your grief.
Be comforted dear friend, solidarity we share
Oh so far, but oh so near!

People say when something big happens, you will always remember exactly where you were and what you were doing. That morning is a living photograph in my mind.

Beautiful poem.

I think the whole world will never forget - I was awoken by a phone call from a friend in Michigan. She asked me to turn on the TV. She said "there are people jumping out of the windows..." Numbed by shock and horror I watched...(thinking it was a night mare) and was stunned by what was unfolding on the screen - I could not believe what I was seeing as I watched the second plane hit the Twin Towers...

I hope that the legacy of 9/11 is that we've all become stronger in our convictions and compassion. Terror didn't win out, people came together to comfort and care for one another. I hope that we never forget the lessons we learned from that horrible event, and that we walk away better people for it.

Beautiful tribute. We will never forget the day - or the horror as we tried to locate family members and friends in the aftermath.
Thank you for a lovely post -

Thank you from Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan to Johannesburg, South Africa. On that horrible day we were citizens of the world.

What a beautiful tribute - thank you. I have the privilege of traveling to many parts of the world and the one thing I am struck with is how similar we all are - if we would just stop focusing on our differences.

Such an awesome tribute. Thank you for sharing.

I think it's true that you will always remember where you were when something like this happens. I was in French class in high school when I found out. We begged the teacher to turn on the tv which was totally against the rules but she did it anyhow because she believed that we were old enough to know. Oh, how awful. What a truly awful day. Things really haven't been the same since.

Your poem is absolutely beautiful. What a tribute. If I can get past what it remembers, your poem is filled with hope as you emphasize all that we humans share. I couldn't agree more.

You are so talented in so many ways.

Thank you, that was beautiful! The US truly hasn't been the same since.

I had a pen pal that lived in NY. I heard from her shortly after 9/11 and she didn't go into a lot of detail other than to say she was ok. But then a year later she talked about how it affected her and it made me realize how much it changed things all over after that.

How lovely and so very true. A moment that truly unites us all across geographical boundaries.
I cried for the people who died and their families - it really didn't matter that we had never met.

Thank you for your poem. It seems like just last year this horrible thing happened. Healing takes so long.
