SPRING IS SPRUNG...

GREETINGS FROM SOUTH AFRICA!
MAXMOM here...

"Spring is sprung,..."

"...the grass is ris...."

"...I wonders where the birdies is...."

"...They say the birds is on the wing...."

"...Ain't that absurd?..."

"... I always thought the wing was on the bird."
As you can see, it's early Spring here in Johannesburg, South Africa.  We've had a snap of cold weather, but if you go outside, there is so much happening.

"Spring is sprung, the grass is ris.
I wonders where the birdie is.
They say the bird is on the wing.
Aint that sound absurd?
I always thought the wing was on the bird."

I have always loved that poem.  I remember my mother reciting it to me as a child.  At the time, she told me that it was written by an 'Indian Chief'.  I've done some research but can't seem to find out who the author is.
Does anyone know who wrote it?
Sending lotsaluv

My father used to often say that to me when I was a child, and again at the start of spring last year. He told me then who wrote it - it is late at night here, but I'll ask him tomorrow who the author was.

We hope you have a lovely Spring in your part of the world. The grass is the best place he world to roll on isn't it!! We spent the afternoon yesterday running on the sand at the beach. We want our summer to last a long time...but we know it won't!

I've never heard that one but I always heard a similar one about the lark on the wing! That was Robert Browning (I think). Welcome to spring....we are still in the last days of summer here! Lots of love, Debbie & Holly

Hi again,

My father remembers it being said (with an American accent) in a 1940's Jimmy Durante movie that he saw. Jimmy Durante was an American comedian/actor with a big nose.

I also heard that "Winnie the Pooh" had used it, but not sure when.

I'm glad spring has sprung where you are.

I've never heard that poem before so I can't help you there.

I'm glad it's spring there but also kinda sad because that means summer is just about over here.

Its been a long time since I heard that verse, and I'm not sure of where it came from.

But your post reminds me of the changes of season which is coming here too--Its in the air!

I always say it too -- but with the Brooklyn accent I first heard it in: "My my, ain't that absoid, I thawt the wing was on the boid."

How cool that you know the poem too all the way across the miles!
